Investing in Google
I have around $7000 to invest. I am looking at Google shares. Do people think it would be a wise investment to put $7000 in there shares. I am looking at long term not short term. 5-10 years or more. any views would be much appreciated

Re: Investing in Google
depends what kinda of margin your account has. If its 10% or so, I can see you doing well in the short term with goog, but personaly I would hold on to goog at least until this current buyout market is done. They are bound to acquire a few more nice sized properties before it's all said and done . Thanks me later =)

Re: Investing in Google
Long-term? Yeah, I'm in it for the long term myself with GOOG from 404, and have added some to the position since then. I wasn't sure when I clicked on this thread whether it was going to be a true 'investment' thread or not. Investments, are always long-term, and never short term. And you should never spend more than 4% of your total account size on any one investment. Spread it around. Trades are short term, and are a different beast altogether.
Heck, with my investments - I NEVER plan on selling them. Google is the oddity in my portfolio, as usually I look for consistent dividends of at least $1.00 annual.
Personally, if I was looking at Google now? I'd wait for a dip in the price before I'd buy. I'll be looking to add to my Google position, but not before we see some sort of dip in the price. Even a small one on the 5 month.

Re: Investing in Google
Google can face competition from Microsoft because I think Google has a simple business of "search engine".
Microsoft has a highly experienced & matured team of computer experts. Microsoft knows what is computers.
Google is run by very young computer experts.
Microsoft can easily develop a better search engine but I think they have other plans.
How about investing in Microsoft shares because Microsoft is a profitable company for many years to come if you consider the untapped/unexplored huge market for China & India which have a developing economy & people here are getting rich

Re: Investing in Google
The problem with MS, is they have become the very thing they despised. I come from an I.T. background, and they can't get it through their thick heads, that their business model doesn't work anymore. I know of 6 businesses within the last 6 months, that have switched their CLIENTS over to a Linux distro; (Microsoft lost the server war a long time ago to Linux) simply because businesses are starting to ask themselves why in the name of god should they go through the licensing expense; when they can get a nice GUI / User-friendly Distro for free?
This is a lesson that Google understands very well, and it's why they are much more than a "Search Engine" company; and one of the reasons I have them in my investment porfolio. I got in late, around $404, but they haven't disappointed me yet. It's rare for me to find a company I'm willing to invest in, that doesn't have a history of dividend payments - and retains everything. But coming from an I.T. background, I like how Google is thinking.

Re: Investing in Google
Small businesses ask that, because they don't have much to lose, but a large business cannot afford to have a server crisis and no one to turn to. Who do you turn to for LINUX problems? LINUX? It's user built, you want to afford a huge I.T. staff or just pay Microsoft? Big clients choose the latter.
