The best bet is to pick a method that makes money regardless of the direction of the market. It is also very important that you focus not just on the system, but on the phycological and money management aspects as well.
One system that I've got good results from consistantly is 60minutestrader.com

I place money management principles and techniques FAR above the methodology to pick stocks. Heck, in my Challenge Project? I'm only running 33% accurate with the last 6 trades, but I'm up 5% on my money. Why? How?
Money management principles. Of which there are 5, maybe 6, depends on how you count them. Risk Analysis, Reward Analysis, Trade Management, Accuracy Rate, Performance Analysis, and then an overall strategy - based on those 5 parts.
Money management. It's literally the keys of the kingdom.
The deals are there for the taking in the commodity sector. Do your research on stocks in this sector that analysts recommend. Best bet is to utilize ETF's to play certain aspects of the sector rather than being left susceptible to fluctuations present in individual stocks.
THe best investments are those made when you make a very well informed decision. Always try to get as much stock market information as possible and let your emotions outside the investment arena.
I just wrote a post in another thread, so I'm gonna quote myself here.

Find stocks that can perform well in both bull and bear markets. For one, review their P/E ratios...their financial records..checking to see if their stocks are not overpriced. As a novice investor I'm learning pretty well after five years.:ro_emote_
