The Alternatives to Privatizing Social Security Are Worse - Part 1 (2005-02-28)

by David John Marotta

My column on privatizing social security generated a great deal of outrage and name calling, but no real alternate proposal. That isn’t surprising since the alternatives to privatization all have dire unintended consequences.

What if Americans were able to choose investments other then bonds to invest their SS funds into? Would this be any different?

it should be obvious to anyone with basic common sense, there will be fewer people paying into SS and more elderly drawing out - it is inevitable so best to face up to it when it is early enough to do something about it, rather then remain in a state of Denial.

in the first place, as I understand it, such a small percentage of SS funds are involved, it is almost a non-event, and at least a no brainer.

seldom is the question asked to receive the most comprehensive and eye-opening response: Where is your retirement money invested?

the politicians whine & scream...about what SS can't do, while these same politicians are not required to be involved in SS, but have their own Private Plans with Private investments. Why can't we have the same choices as the politicians who use scare tactics while doing just a small percentage of what they are already doing?

most companies, large unions, the largest being the educational retirement systems such as the one in California. and guess what? they all are in private investments, yet pretend to believe that a very small percentage of our SS should not do what they are already doing?

it is amazing that the biased and crooked news media does not advise the public who know little about what they post, that the entire nation's retirement programs are glued to private investments as proposed for only a small percentage of our SS funds to help alleive the burden that will continue to grow almost daily.

just having the right to do what the Protestors, who are already doing what is proposed, doesn't seem much to ask...and if it so bad, FORCE them to start contributing All of their own retirement money to SS....If it is bad as they state, then they are in very serious trouble, but they should know better, many just pop off at the mouth pretending, denying and protesting any change - even using the topic for ulterior motives and political gain. Force our Politicians to all be in SS for their own retirement. that will not only help, but will scare the hell out of them and it would also Shut em' up!
