The first step is to conduct keyword research to make sure that the keywords or keyword phrases you are targeting are not too competitive yet have enough search traffic to warrant their targeting. The second step is to set up meta tags in your website's code so that search engines are aware of what keywords you want your site attached to. The primary meta tags that are absolutely necessary if you want to optimize your website is the title, description and keyword tags. If you do not know HTML or use a content management system like Joomla, there are usually fields within your admin panel to include meta information such as site description and targeted keywords. Meta tags appear as follows:
<meta name="META NAME" content="CONTENT HERE">
Which means for description and keyword it is set up like:
<meta name="description" content="Your site description here (include your top keywords and keyword phrases in the front half of your description).">
<meta name="keywords" content="primary keyword, secondary keyword, backup keyword, backup keyword, tertiary keywords">
