E-gold is practically worthless now as far as the exchangers are concerned, so its no great loss that you can't create new accounts. You can read about the changes ahead: http://blog.e-gold.com/2008/07/a-new-beginning.html or you can follow the link from their front page. Their new T&C means you can't use e-gold for anything illegal in your local jurisdiction, which means pyramids and Ponzis are out practically everywhere and gambling is a no-no in the US. I can't see e-gold being used much in the legit world where Visa and Paypal rule the roost.
I allow e-gold to be used as a "churning" account only. That's about all it is worth to use it for that I can see. It does allow folks a means of using their e-gold for something and gain a profit. I'm not afraid to use it for that purpose only.
Also, I can't see them being closed down because there would be such a class action suit that it would cause the government great problems which they would lose big time.
I enjoy this arena myself, but there is not any money to be made unless you are an admin and scam folks. Or, you are on the receiving end of a program that has a lot of money in it already that needs to be given away ... which is my case.
As for e-gold, you can always cash it out by following the e-gold links. But, I think that if you only have a few hundred dollars, it can always be used to play the hyips for fun.

If you have only a few hundred dollars it will be not a big lost If you loosed your money.
With eGold having been run by gov. appointed receivers for past couple years plus, recently filing for bankruptcy, and now indictment of owners for money laundering, never mind they will be going to jail, why would gov. who is running eGold be interested in signing up new people? With IRS having access to all records from start, this should be an interesting period for all users in U.S.
