Default GM going to recover?

Everyone knows the news on GM, while the American automaker vows to make a full recovery, it's questionable whether GM will ever reach the level it once enjoyed as America's largest domestic auto company.

I'd like to get everyone's opinion here, do you think GM will ever reach the level it was once at again and make a full recovery, or do you think the company is in for years of struggle and possible failure in the long run?

Years of struggle. Toyota, Honda and Ford will gain tremendous market share because consumers will be reluctant to buy cars from a bankrupt company. I think the electric car idea will fail miserably. If they can limit GM down to 3-4 franchises and work on them well than GM will recover, but for the near future they will really struggle.

I can`t see why it should get back to the No.1 spot, it`s lost too much ground, and there`s a lot of competition in the auto industry.

From what I`ve read GM was too slow to respond to the demand for smaller, less gas guzzling cars. Everyone saw the writing on the wall, why didn`t they?

geoff01 what you have read is correct. However it's not the only reason they went bankrupt. It is more to do with bad management in general and too many brands. The most scucessful companies are the ones that focus. Take Southwest Airlines for example. They focus on low fare travel and don't provide higher classes. As a result even directly after 9/11 they were still profitable because of their focus while other companies with broader scopes lost money. GM had WAY to broad of a scope with too many brands that overlapped.

Take a look at companies that aren't failing. Toyota, Mercedes, BMW, Honda etc. While these are all not american based all of these companies have something else in common. They don't have too many brands. If you have taken a look at the American market you notice that we overlap way too much when we release brands. Then take a look at the foreign Market. Mercedes has Mercedes and Maybach. BMW I am pretty sure they just have BMW but I'm not positive but I know they don't overlap either. Toyota has Toyota, Scion, and Lexus. A small overlap with Scion and Toyota but Scion is more of a niche market anyway. The list of brands American automakers have been trying to sell now are probably larger than the list of competing brands out there lol.

GM is done for. FORD never talks about how they survived this fiasco and it sure wasn't the cars they sold. The electric car was once heavily backed by GM and Ford but the plug was pulled before it could get into a campaign ever launched (thanks GDubya)

You can't blame the consumer for buying a reliable, efficient automobile over the American models.

Me too I hate to see it go down I think GM was/is a great company with some nice cars like the Corvette, it's an absolute machine. Their consumer grade vehicles are just too cheaply built though..I hope they can turn it around.

I think they will recover but they will never be as strong as they were.
