If we get more and more back-link on the site and make use duplicate content then it will count as spamming and Google will keep it in the sandbox due to which the ranking of our site will stop increasing

If the almighty google thinks your site is invalid or thinks you have duplicate content or doesn't like the way your site looks it will not index your site. That means your site will not be shown on its search results page - or it may show up only on page 238, which no one will see.
Once this happens you have to take a proactive approach. Go in and look at your pages, do they contain duplicate content? If so rewrite it in your own words so that it is unique.
If you have images on there, make use of the alt img tag. Give each image a unique description that is relative to the content on that page.
Use descriptive titles, headers and such for each page - and make them unique. Each page must be different.
Now you have to start marketing your site again, go out and try to get backlinks.
Perhaps resubmit to the index sites.
It may take some time, but if you made your site more unique, the almighty google bots will find you and begin to index you again.

Google SandBox = Old phrase/term.
It referred to sites that were "restricted" in some ways in performance, limiting their ability to do well in the SERPs for certain/all search terms, etc.

It is Now a commonly mis-used term, as the SandBox effect that is referred to kind of disappeared sometime ago.
