From what I've read a lot of webmasters are unhappy about their sites disappearing from the top rankings after the Penguin update.

Thanks, yes this update is for those sites who has posted posting duplicate content, overlapping, or redundant articles or blogs on the same or similar topics with slightly different keyword variations.

I have a site that has been hit (from page 2 to page 4) but despite I have to say that penguin has more pros than cons. It values fresh and unique content, it values usage, it values organic over robotic link building. so it values quality! And that's a good thing.

Many people might have experienced ranking drops since the Penguin update but when you check out a lot of web niches and commercial markets, especially the hot business ones, you will realize that a lot of older sites which had been previously on the front pages of Google for their targeted keywords are still there, and some of them may have even advanced up a few places. Websites with original contents and good packs of links, in nearly all fields have not changed downward.

On the other hand, when you look at websites whose admins are complaining a lot about drops in positions and also having lost volumes of traffic shares, you will mostly find duplicate contents either from other directories or blogs which have already contained the original copies of the materials. Also, some artificial link building methods can account for many drops in positions because some links are actually devalued and the quality of them is today becoming a serious issue.
