Found out about this from Jude at nobsnetwork....

The best domains are being auctioned off.....

What a surprise.....
So far the highest bid till now is sexshop.asia at $53,607 with second placing sex.asia at $33,000

Yeah how this worked was that you could put a ticket in for any domains that you want before the .asia extension was released. If more then 1 person put in to get a domain then it goes to auction. If you are the only one they you get it. I heard something like 400,000 domains were taken pre-registery.

Domain names are kind of worthless these days. Anyone who knows about SEO would never pay more than the ten dollars it takes to register a url.

Rubbish. There is a big demand for "the right" domain names and a lot of money can be made from them.

I'm not saying money can't be made from them. But lets say you were selling widgets, but widgets dot com would cost you 1000 to buy, as a site builder I'd go with awesome widgets dot com for 10 bucks. If you could snag widgets for 10 bucks, and resell it for 1000, awesome. But if you're in the market for a url you're going to use, it's silly to invest the money.

Depends on what you're selling, even widgets.com is a bit too long to be memorable but certainly better than awesomewidgets.com

If I could pick up sex.com or OK.com for $1000 I'd think I've died and gone to heaven. Why do you suppose these type of very short premium domains are so sought after? If I could afford either of the above I'm sure I'd develop a site and find a use for them.

Of course... but it's not realistic these days to be ale to get sex.com or ok.com.
