Gold is used as a hedge for a volatile market. Since march, the market really has not been vulnerable as the volatility index has fallen dramatically. You can invest in gold the commidity, the gold etf (GLD) or any gold name. I like to be diversified with all of my investments and not be concentrated heavily into one sector (I've got biotech, financial, oil, metal and an entertainment stock). Good luck!
