How I Make Money Online

I have been online for about 9 years. I spent the 1st 5 years in HYIP's, scams etc and ended up losing tens of thousands of dollars in that time.

About 4 years ago I decided to make money online the slow hard way... with websites.

At first I did Adwords but quickly stopped that after realizing that it takes money to make money with Adwords and Pay Per Click advertizing.

I then decided to spend about $500 on several programs to help me learn about SEO, making search engine freindly websites and getting free traffic. That was great and I gradually learnt HTML, CSS and how to get free traffic. My sites were getting about 1,000 unique visitors a day combined (4 sites), and I was making about $500 a month ... maybe more, but it was hard work writing articles for hours and hours a day.

Then I discovered Forex trading. I went headlong into Forex to the point where I didn't build any new websites. I lost 3 accounts learning to trade and am now quite successful as a trader, but more importantly I developed a large group of other traders around me. I spend a lot of time in a few forums and give freely of my knowlegde and time. Doing this has paid of tremendously.

I have leveraged this to build a fast growing referal business in Managed accounts and a private loan program. I don't use mailing lists, I don't realy advertize and my business grows daily.

I guess what I'm saying is that to succeed online is not really any different to offline. You must build relationships, trust and not rip people off. Give value for money... even to the point of giving for free. Not giving money for free, but your time and advice.

I left the workforce 18 months ago (Jan '06) and will never need to work for a boss again.

Sure you can... just don't expect it to be easy. Don't wait for the Porsche to drop out of the sky into your garage. Roll up your sleeves and work at your passion.

Find something you are very knowledgable in and search for related forums. Take part in answering questions that you know about. Visit those forums daily. Don't spread yourself too thinly by visiting a lot of forums, find a few and concentrate on them. I've done this twice now, first in the Global Greyhounds forum because I was a Greyhound trainer and breeder, then in the TalkGold "Forex" forum when I started trading.

I also spend some time in this "Making Money with a Website" forum, but not a lot. I find that the people in this forum are all after a "quick fix" rather than learning how to make money with a website... probably because TalkGold is basically a HYIP forum.

Buy a .com domain name and good quality hosting. Build a website (a blog is OK) and post an article to it every day. DON'T make a Free blog with blogspot or put your domain on Free hosting... it won't work.

Get a REAL domain of your own, and put a link to your website in the signature file on your forum posts, but don't go spamming it all over. JUst keep it neat and discreet.

If your forum posts are informative and helpful, people who read them WILL visit your blog or website. You will gradually develop a group of loyal friends who will stick with you as long as you give value for money.

Don't be in a hurry to monetize your website. I would not put Adsense or affiliate ads on the website for at least 4 to 6 weeks. In fact my main website (on SEO) has no adsense or affiliate ads on it, and it is a PR6 rank. I do put affiliate links in articles I write about products I've bought.

nice post to share your experience. i oso loss in HYIP investment. had try before Forex but not very understand the market works. so still making loss. i had a adsense blog, few websites earning few cents due to low traffic. appreciate that if you could share your Forex trading knowledge

I have been doing several similar things over the past few years and mostly trade the markets for a living now, this was an extremely slow and at times painful learning experience but well worth it in the end.

I definitely agree with your points about registering a new website or blog and then promoting that using good and unique content pages everyday and also with the help of the incoming and one way links from other resources simply because so many bloggers are now telling success stories about their ad publishing experiences and how they have managed to earn online.
