Everyone says “content” is the “king”. So why need link building ? I am going to explain this with a real life example.

Suppose there are 200 good sites talking about the topic “Will meditation cure cancer”. Suppose all these sites have good contents related to the topic. Since every website have really good contents, how Google and other search engines give top 10 positions out of 200 sites.

Here search engines will have to decide what sites are best voted by users. To determine the site popularity search engines have to consider back links.
So you can see even though the content is the king, it will not able to help to get top rank without link
building when competition is high.

You should ask the question in other way: is it possible for a site to be popular only because of backlinks? The answer is no.
And is it possible only because of content? Yes.
But if it doesn't have any competitors.
You are right, links are an advantage over competitors with equal "weight" of content. But you can do without them.

The problem is that according to the search engines, links and quality of content are interrelated concepts. According to SEO they are two independent concepts. And links are usually built not on content. They should be done as a complex work. In such situation, of course, the content building must be accompanied by a link building and vice versa.
