Lets not forget the Republicans are just as guilty as well taking money from the SS for their pet projects as well.

Regan and George W. Bush raided it. Especially George W. Bush for his false war in Iraq.

Here's a link to some questions & answers re: SSA:

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/ProgData/fundFAQ.html#n4

I retired from the SSA but nonetheless always knew that you couldn't "Trust" the funds to "Government" administration. As long as a large amount of revenue exists, even in a so-called Trust Fund, Government officials can't keep their sticky hands off of it! And, most of us with any sense knows, that any money in the US Treasury is "funny money" anyway. It's backed by NOTHING and doesn't even have the value of the cost of printing it!

But - that doesn't sell newspapers (now THERE'S an obsolete saying now...)
-or provide usable 'talking points' for politicians...
Just musing,

What a touchy subject that we have going here, The Republicans vs. the Democrats.

I hope that someday we all wake up and get back to Americans vs. the Government.

Social Security, the facts that Awty put up are correct, but that doesn't let the Republicans off because they have been in control of The House and Congress several times and did nothing to correct it.

As far as social programs go I feel that we need less of these. I know that a lot of people feel that they need the Government to take care of them, but if the government would leave us be we have proven that we can take care of ourselves.

Americans give freely to all kinds of charities and I think I can decide which one to give to and which one I do not want to give to. Me personally I do not want to give my money that I have worked hard for to people that do not want to work and want a hand out. I concede that there are people who really need help and deserve it and I want to help them when I can, not forced to help those who do not deserve it.

What happened to " A government of the people, by the people, for the people". I think the for the people has long been put to the curb.

Same here. That, after all, is the REAL issue (my opinion).
Just my opinion,

$500 million for a new American embassy in Iraq. Wonder how many hospitals and schools in the US could have done with that money?

One of the basic strategies of all battles is to divide and conquer. That is exactly what the government is doing to the American people.

We have the Republicans vs. the Democrats, the blacks against the whites, males against females, rich against the poor, middle class against the rich and poor. Union against non union. Pro life against pro murder. The list goes on and on and on.

We have Americans against most every other country. People in other countries have been taught to dislike Americans and Americans have been taught to dislike other nationalities. Its embedded in the news broadcasts and filtering into out government run schools.

While we are fighting among ourselves while our elected officials are continually passing legislation that is costing the American taxpayers more and more money and depriving us of more and more of out rights. I'm not blaming either party I'm blaming both and the American people for letting it happen.

It would only take 15% of the American voters to correct this problem. In every election that 15% needs to put party affiliation aside and vote out the incumbent official. 99% of election are so close that this is all it would take. You will have on both sides those that vote their party no matter who is running or what they stand for. (Kool Aid drinkers) After 3 or 4 cycles of this we would have all new officials and they would need to hear the message that if they don't do what is best for the citizens of this country then they will be ousted in the next election. Remember we vote every 2 years. So it would only take 6 to 8 years.

Think about this and let me know what you think, I have a very open mind to anything or any ideas.

Richard

Would work, if people were willing to do some thinking about where things are likely headed. Unfortunately, most people don't think beyond the 'Hey, if THIS person gets (re)elected, I'll get xxx out of it...
(Lower taxes, more benefits, etc.), but without looking at the COST of these things, rather than the 'benefits'.
What I'd personally like to see, is more people 'waking up', and realizing that the government is supposed to SERVE THE PEOPLE, ***NOT*** the other way around. And, it IS within (or - has the 'power' been usurped too far already?)
the power of voters to REDUCE government power.
One of the big 'problems' that I see with that, is that it's EASIER for people to 'just be taken care of - by the government', rather than taking their own initiative, and doing things for themselves.
ANYTIME the government 'grows' - is NOT a good thing...
Just my opinion,
Jeff
