What setup do big-name hedge funds and investment companies have to minimise taxation while staying squeaky clean?

Do they have Seychelle companies and bank accounts in Cyprus?

I'd just like to get on with business without:

a) Having to worry about the taxman tracking me down
b) Having to worry about the bank objecting to large sums going into and out of the account
c) Having to worry about the bank going bust.

i.e. minimise taxation but trade like a normal company.

Also: I'd like to minimise government oversight. Like, you have to have licences to set up an investment company in a First World country(?)

Yep, BVI, Cayman, Hong Kong even. Banking can be another story, you will need a banking relationship if you talking about big deposits/withdrawals. I suggest you personally open the account and then visit them every few months in person.

Seychelles IBC are not well seen in the international business/financial world, not to say about what local govs thinks about corporations registered there.
Banking in Cyprus is still a way to go for a lot of setups.

Offshore banking is one of the stickier issues of going offshore. Do your research. Talk to honest professionals, other investors, and search the web for reviews. You can never be too careful with your money. Offshore banking is available in many jurisdictions (as mentioned) such as Belize, Singapore, Panama, etc and there are legal firms waiting to help and advise you, for example in Panama Mata & Pitti, but you need to still do your own research.
