This is one of those industries which never seems to be impacted by the economy. If anything, it increases, but wow, what a crowded industry. I use to do well promoting online gambling, until gov. took it all away. Now the same is being discussed by some in gov. to ban porn, so who knows, but I wouldn't rely on any one business in these crazy times. lol

I find keywords that dont have a lot of competition but have the opportunity of making some good advertising dollars. I then try to rank high in Google for these keywords and then go to companies who specialize in the keywords and sell adspace, articles, links, etc. The first time I did it it worked like a charm and I have since started three more sites with similiar tactics.
