Someone told me if your money is not working for you, I might as well stuff it under my mattress.

I know nothing about investing. I am looking for general advice, low or high risk, just some place to start my research process.

Here is where I stand:
Outright own my home, last year, appraised at 470K, probably could sell for 400K now, nothing owed.

50K HELOC to my bank, at prime.

10K owed to another HELOC, at prime, but 40K available.

10K owed to a past mortgage that was not closed

Wife has 80K in mutual funds, it moves around a bit, but generally grows every year.

I work as little as possible, my month to month is about 5K, which I barely scrape together. This pays for bills, car, food, etc.

Property tax is low, a few grand a year due to the way it was set up.

1.5K every quarter as part of an inheritance.

Thats where I stand, what should I do?

I should note, the 10K I took out of the HELOC, was to put into the stock market, I was up to 15K on some good buys, but some bad news came out and I lost, I am down to 6K, so I am 4K in the hole on that one.

One thing I am thinking, is if Apple drops to 160, I will buy 200 shares, wait for it to return to 190+ and make a quick few grand, but that is not much. It is also risky. I also am not sure pulling that out of a mutual fund, plus the c-gains on it, as well as the short term on the stock itself, would not wash any profits away.

Simple links, simple terms, I am not afraid to spend hours researching, I just do not know where to begin.

take a trip to your local financial advisor.

What I would do is place no less then 350k into one of the current paying HYIP's on here, a lower daily one is best. In a few months you can have millions and would never have to work again. Then take the remainder 50k and put it in one of 500% daily programs (high risk) but within a few days you could be almost a billionaire.

With all due respect Jeff, take a loot at my first sentence, I guess you skipped over that.

It was clear that the rest of my post was a joke. why would someone put 400k in hyip??

people who are totally money-ignorant dont just wind up with 400k in their bank on accident, unless they win the lottery. So 1) either this person doesnt have 400k and just making it up, or 2) he already has some sort of plan/ idea on what to do with it and doesnt need to take advise from the people here on talkgold.

For what it's worth, I HAVE seen people posting that kind of stuff, and it was NOT a joke. I've also know people who have actually placed $400k into these things. My apologies if I misunderstood.
Actually, his financial situation is somewhat similar to mine. I've played around with various money-making ideas myself, and the best one I've found so far, at least for ME, is trading foreign currencies, but that makes sense to me.
Actually, a visit to a financial planner is an EXCELLENT idea. Although it might be wise to consider that some 'planners' might be more interested in their OWN profits, rather than keeping the interests of their customers topmost in their minds.

I've also found, in my case, that it's best for me to find things that I'm interested in, and have some understanding of, so that it actually makes sense to me, what I'm getting into, and have a good idea of the risk/reward situation.

There's usually little reward without any risk, but usually best to have a REAL good idea what the risk actually is...

Every person's situation, financials, risk tolerance, is different, so yes, informed advice and careful consideration would seem to be prudent.

lol go to Bernie Madoffs office if it is still there, they will get you steady % every year till the money ends up...
dont trust those advisors too, do your own research, they dont know more than average which can be obtained by searching for them...
since it will be you who decides finally, better give advice yourself after research. brokers and advisors arent good ones always to trust they are also alike to HYIPs lol...
anyway better to do your own DD and decide what is best, lots of forums and internet sites today can be enough to make decisions...

I think right now the best bet is to stick it in your mattress!! Just don't accidentally upgrade mattresses and throw it away like the lady in Israel yesterday!! Had 1,000,000 in green stuffed in her mattress, daughter surprised mom with a new mattress and life savings gone. what a horrible wednsday
