Interesting. As a UK citizen I found it an incredible hassle opening up a standard checking account at HSBC. They demanded absolutely that I visit the bank in person.
Also, bear in mind that the channel islands offshore banks will charge you fees if you don't have a load in there (more than 25,000 pounds or so) even thought the minimum deposit will be less than that.
If for example you invest 1000 pounds and they charge you 20/month just to keep the account open you aren't making anything on that tax-free interest.
Slogold can answer this also, but I have always seen HSBC require your documents to be approved by a local HSBC bank or sometimes a correspondent bank.
