Well, you may like or not like him and his music, but it is undeniable that he belongs to the group of very few who actually made huge change to the music worldwide. You can easily say BEFORE Michael Jackson, and AFTER. It is not actually necessary to love/hate artists work to find her great, mediocre, or lousy. It is not that much how artists effects the public. It is all about how artist effects other artists.
Personally, I loved few of his songs, but was indifferent to others. I often made Javex, and Pinocchio jokes about him... The truth is, it does not make him less of a star... He was indeed one of the greatest.

Not at all surprised that people will try to cash in. Read earlier that copyright of images of dead people in the UK aren't an issue (they are in the US), don't know how they are affected in the rest of the world. Now we will see an influx of tacky mugs, keyrings, mousemats, t-shirts, etc. and the high end memorabilia companies doing their stuff, same tacky junk really but with an expensive price tag. Pretty pathetic.
