I would recommend reading the above article and then watching the movie. Rhett proves to be a very shrewd, forward looking and wise person in his estimation of the futility in fighting the yankees and how he fought back as a sovereign individual in his own way by "going offshore". In fact, the business he was involved in was mostly offshore too.



There are aspects of his character that leave something to be desired though.
