Sports arbitrage is one of the few things that work. A few years ago I seriously ran the numbers to see if you could make a living out of it and there a serious pitfalls.
The first is capitalization. You need at least 30k deposited in 15-20 bookmakers. This money must be untouchable and left as working capital.
It seems like a high amount but let me explain.
With the good arb services when a bet comes up you must take it then and there. The lines move and in 10 mins the bet could be gone. Expecially if it is a high % one. But most of the arbs only occure well before a game is to begin, even days before. So what happens is your working capital gets tied up in bets that take days to resolve. In order to have the capital to keep taking the bets as they come you need 30k otherwise you will be twiddling your thumbs for most of the time not making much money.
The time factor. The good bets must be taken within 10-15 mins. So you must be at your computer all day every day. Making a living from arbs is not something that can be done at home a few hours every evening. You must quit your job or not have any other current emplyment to focus full time.
The monthly cost of the arb service. The best arb service I found (and this was a few years ago so things have probably changed since then) was a british mob http://www.zero-risk-arbitrage.com/ that charged a fortune, I think it was 400 pounds per month or something.
This means you cannot just start with 5k as you would barely make enough to cover the fees. Add to that the fact you must quit your full time job/lose current income to have time to arb properly.
If you can cover the capital cost and time factor then arbs can be a full time business.
thanks guys for your input.
I will give it a go -start mid range with about 20K - 15 books - then look to deposit a bit more if all goes well.
may be in touch agisthos and focusianos if I need some advice.
i read what agishtos said..maybe he is right..probably he is right..but because i don't want to quit my job and i don't want to spend my whole day in front of my pc, i have a diferrent tactic.as i mentioned i have a neteller account.there i have 2000 euro(you can start with even lower bankroll).when a surebet comes up, i deposit the money via neteller to each bookmaker accordingly to the odds.Of course that depends on the money you want to risk. For example, if i want to risk 200 euro, with the proper calculation i split the money into the bookmakers and for a 2% surebet, it turns back 204 euro.the whole procedure doesn't last more than 2 minutes.is there any job that gives you 4 euro in 2 minutes??after that, and as one of the bookmaker will have win, i withdraw the funds back to neteller's account.and that's go on..so you don't need to have funds to each bookmaker, just at neteller.there are some tricks to prevent the line changing during this procedure, such as betting for 2 days after, so these lines won't change quickly because the others ''surebettors'' won't bet at this game.I also use betbrain, oddsportal and bettor paradise.as i said i don't intend to do it professionally so i don't have any subscription..maybe it was more profitable but i don't care a lot..
sports arbitrage needs a lot of cash and many accounts with the various bookmakers. very often the juice is small and it can be risky in the sense that the second bet might not be successful due to a change in odds within that short time frame or some rules set by certain bookmakers.
i have been there and understand the risk and low profitability of it. moving money around the bookmakers can incur cost as well sometimes so do take note of it.
another form of sports arbitrage is doing it in betfair with just one account. the principle is laying low and backing high. you can do it in popular sports like soccer and horse racing (with in-play mode only).
I hope those reading this thread are smart enough to see that Gold Nugget invest has nothing to do with Sports Arbitrage. It is just another HYIP that will crash sooner or later.
These programs always use a legitimate pitch, like they are forex traders or something. But behind it all is just a ponzi hyip.
Lets have further discussion in this thread on real sports arbitrage.

How long, in your experience, do HYIPs last? The answer is a few months maximum. GNI has been around 3 years come October '09.
Earnings can be withdrawn immediately, re-investment is manual, maximum operating funds is limited, so that the three arbers can manage the accounts comfortably, the program is going private in the first quarter of 2010, bank wires allowed. All non-HYIP traits. There have been no negative reports in three years.
I am not trying to win you over, I am just countering your statement about it being a ponzi without any proof.

Well Brian, 5 minutes of due diligence shows that Gold Nugget invest has only been claiming to be running for 3 years. There is no proof from any of the monitoring sites they have been around for so long with such a track record.
And no, having a domain name registered for years is not proof. It is commonplace amongst the hyip scammers, they sit on domain names for years and then bring them out with a website and story about how they have been around for so long.
Only 1 monitoring site, (money-news-online.com) is actually following Gold Nugget Invest and this for less than 1 YEAR.
This is not to say that you can't hit them hard and make a few dollars, just make sure to get your principle out.
In answer to your first question, how long do hyip last? From 1 week to 4 years. Knowing which of the very few programs that last more than 3 months is the million dollar question obviously.
