Australia has their own laws which make the offerings of Full Tilt Poker and many other forms of gambling illegal:
"On 28 June 2001 the Australian Government passed the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (IGA). The government said that the IGA was important to protect Australians from the harmful effects of gambling.
The IGA targets the providers of interactive gambling services, not their potential or actual customers. The IGA makes it an offence to provide an interactive gambling service to a customer physically present in Australia, but it is not an offence for Australian residents to play poker or casino games online. In stark contrast to the USA, sports betting online is also completely legal in Australia, with many state government licensed sportsbooks in operation, such as Centrebet, Sportingbet & Betfair.
The offense applies to all interactive gambling service providers, whether based in Australia or offshore, whether Australian or foreign owned."

So technically Okosh is playing poker and losing with an illegal online provider.

That is what the law appears to be...I think we are more liberal in the way we allow our citizens to win or lose money at illegal online opportunities without interference or fear of being busted. It keeps us relaxed....

That's an incredibly complex question and any answer will be subjective and dependent on which political sector is asked.

AFAIK, we are lower than Canada, but have an entirely different system WRT to healthcare, pensions, compulsory superannuation etc.
Australia largely missed out on the GFC, and the economy is currently "booming" (again depending on your source) and we are facing massive chronic skilled labour shortages which will undoubtedly require upping our intake of skilled workers.
Our unemployment rate has actually fallen compared to 2006 and our job shortage rate increasing.
Like Canada, however, our system is based on that of Britain, which means we are chronically over governed and bureaucracy heavy.

Taxes were high. Rupert Murdoch moved to America and became a citizen for this reason. We have a very good social security system that helps those in need though. It is funded by that same tax revenue.

Re: CS offtop posts
According to :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:In...By_Country.svg
we have lower tax rates than Canada and the US. Maybe the tide has changed since Rupert left...perhaps that is why his son lives here...

Err, no.
Murdoch became a US citizen to satisfy the requirement that only US citizens were permitted to own American TV stations.

You are right, but at the time he made a comment about the US having lower taxes and cited that reason here. I clearly remember reading it.

He is not the only one who moved to the States for that reason...there have been some from the UK who did the same thing 'back in the day'.
